A five-letter word has a double letter when the same letter appears twice in a row, as in APPLE, GREEN, or SHELL. The pair can appear near the beginning, in the middle, or near the end. A repeated letter elsewhere in a word is not an adjacent double unless the two copies touch.

Three ways to use the pattern
Treat the pair as one visual block
Write APPLE as A–PP–L–E. Four movable units are easier to scan than five individual tiles, but remember that PP still consumes two copies.
Test the pair in more than one position
If __LL_ produces nothing, move LL to _LL__ and ___LL before abandoning it. A confirmed pair is useful; an assumed position is not.
Use the other three letters as the proof
The pair attracts attention, so errors often hide in the remaining letters. Count those letters after the double is placed.
COMMON TRAPS
Keep a useful clue from becoming a false assumption
Counting a separated repeat as a double
ARRAY has RR together, but the two As are separated. Only the adjacent RR is the double-letter pattern.
Reset: Mark the exact neighboring positions before searching.
Forgetting the second physical tile
Seeing one P and a familiar APPLE pattern can make the missing copy feel invisible.
Reset: Cross off both copies of the repeated letter before placing anything else.
Assuming every double is a consonant
Words such as GREEN, LOOSE, and TOOTH use double vowels, which create a different set of likely shapes.
Reset: Run one consonant-pair scan and one vowel-pair scan.
